Barbara - Rosanne Pappas

This year I've decided to sketch many of The Great Holy Men and Women of the Church. Come along with me on this journey as we get to know our elder brothers and sisters in faith.

"And therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head, laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us, let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us," Heb 12:1

December 4

Barbara [Greek: Βαρβάρα, Varvara] [c. Mid 3rd Century] was born in the city of Nicomedia (in modern Turkey) and was the daughter of a rich Greek pagan named Dioskorous. She was carefully guarded by her father who kept her locked up in a tower in order to preserve her from the outside world. Having secretly become a Christian, she rejected an offer of marriage that she received through him. Ultimately, she acknowledged herself to be a Christian and her father brought her before the prefect of the province, who had her cruelly tortured, Barbara held true to her faith. Finally she was condemned to death by beheading. Her father himself carried out the death-sentence. However, as punishment for this, he was struck by lightning on the way home and his body was consumed by flame.
